  • Tess Palmer, a middle school health and physical educator and department chair at Cuthbertson Middle School, has been named the Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the NC Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NCAAHPERD).

  • Monroe High School’s quarterback Quayshawn Chambers has been chosen as the Charlotte Touchdown Club’s High School Comeback Player of the Year.

  • April Phillips, a 3-year veteran teacher assistant at Hemby Bridge Elementary, was named the 2011 Teacher Assistant of the Year.

Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is safe haven for students

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club area director Moses Fox III, at left, plays a game of Air Hockey with students in the club, an after-school program for Union County Public Schools students that is housed at Monroe Middle. The club’s doors opened officially on Jan. 17, 2011, with 24 students signed up to attend. On the third day, however, that number had already doubled. Club organizers held a grand opening Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012.

Young poets from Western Union Elementary are to be published
